cari amici oggi ho aggiornato il mio vecchio pc passando dal fantastico ubuntu 7.10 all'8.. ma dopo l'aggiornamento,al riavvio,mi fa fare il login,la password e mi compare lo sfondo di colore classico ubuntu e la freccetta del mouse.Allora ho pigiato alt-ctrl-f1 e ho avviato il fail safe, poi ho scritto startx ho rifatto il login e pass.... e mi dice di cancellare un file temp perchè mi da un errore display 0.....E da qui in poi finiscono le mie conoscenze procedurali da voi insegnatomi negli anni....

...spero riesco a ripristinare senza formattare

Fai quello che ti dice: cancella il file /tmp/.X0-lock.

Ti autentichi in testuale, poi dai il comando "sudo rm /tmp/.X0-lock" e riavvii il server grafico. Dovrebbe bastare.

mmm... c'e` X che non riesce a far partire il desktop environment.

Alcune cose:
L'aggiornamento e` stato solamente il passaggio dalla 7.10 alla 8 o anche qualche update successivo?
Che d.e. usi? E quale prima dell'aggiornamento?
Quanto spazio hai a disposizione nelle varie partizioni?
C'e` qualche informazione utile in /var/log/Xorg.0.log (o come si chiama in ubuntu)?
C'e` qualche informazione utile in ~/.xsession-errors?

Riesci a postarmi (usando la stessa procedura dei log di windows) i log che ti ho chiesto? E anche /var/log/messages, gia` che ci siamo...
E anche i d.e. che usavi e che usi ora?

Le informazioni che hai dato sono troppo poche per capire cosa sta succedendo.

ma c'e un modo per salvare questo file log in questa condizione ?
o devo riscrivermi tutto a penna e ricopiarlo per postare il log?
Ma faccio prima a formattare e reinstallare la vecchia versione ubu 7.10?

Ah, non saper usare la riga di comando... Da quella si fa praticamente tutto...

Hai una chiavetta? Fai cosi`: fai partire il pc normalmente, poi tenti di autenticarti come utente normale graficamente, non riesci ad ottenere il desktop usuale. Ora premi Ctrl-Alt-F1, ti autentichi come utente normale, dai il comando "sudo tail -f /var/log/messages" e inserisci la chiavetta. Dovresti veder comparire a video qualcosa di simile a:

Ora dai un Ctrl-C per uscire dal tail e poi i comandi "sudo mount -t auto /dev/sdb1 /mnt", "sudo cp /var/log/Xorg.0.log /mnt", "sudo cp .xsession-errors /mnt", "sudo umount /mnt"
Nella chiavetta avrai i file d'interesse. Ovviamente sostituisci /dev/sdb1 del mount con quanto riportato dal messages.

Se hai dato il comando cosi come l'hai riportato è normale che fallisca....
Tra Xorg.0.log e /mnt ci va lo spazio :-)

Gamed, scusa il ritardo ma sono senza internet a casa e non riesco a seguirvi troppo, da cosa vedo avevi i driver nvidia installati, quello penso crea il pasticcio, dovresti editare il file xorg.conf nella sezione "Device" sostituendo sostituendo "Driver "nv"" con "Driver "vesa"", in quella maniera dovrebbe partire con i driver generici, poi reinstalli quelli nvidia, seleziona l'avvio con modalità di emergenza da grub, quindi per editare il file usa "vim":

vi /etc/X11/xorg.conf

se non c'è installalo:

apt-get install vi

PS: Ho installato la nuova versione di Kubuntu su macchina virtuale, mi sono accorto che il file "xorg.conf" non c'è più, ma se ai fatto l'avanzamento di versione credo che sul tuo sia tutt'ora presente, non so però quanto lo prenda in conto.
